(Or, Genuine Fakes versus Fake Fakes)

"I had just walked through one of the newest shopping malls in New Delhi. It is one of those globalized reproductions where you see the same stores whether you are in Hong Kong, Paris, Tokyo, or New York. What's in a name? A lot of money, depending on whose name it is. But you can also walk into shops in Bangkok or Jakarta and find, in popular jargon, a "knockoff version" of the brand name that looks identical to the original. If it is a Rolex you are looking for, the shopkeeper will tell the person who is wearing an original one, "You'd better put yours in your pocket, because when you place it side by side with my fake one you won't be able to tell the difference." The replicas are so identical to the real ones that only an expert can tell the difference. When, out of curiosity, I asked one salesperson how they were even able to manufacture these, he reprimanded me, saying that his fakes were genuine fakes and not the fake fakes that the man around the corner sold."

In the New Testament the apostle John puts the responsibility squarely on the shoulders of individual believers to test the spirits behind every teacher. Christians are to subject whatever is taught to the acid test of Scripture (See 1 John 4:1-6; Isaiah 8:20; Deuteronomy 13:1-5; 1 Thessalonians 5:19-21 etc.)

The Bereans of Acts 17 are models: “These were ore fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.” (Acts 17:11).

In every age, Satan has been the master counterfeiter. In Moses’ day there were Jannes and Jambres (2 Timothy 3:8,9), who copied the plagues sent my Jehovah to judge Pharoah. In the beginning of the Church age there were false teachers already twisting the scriptures (2 Corinthians 11:14).

In our day there are as many cults as people who want to start a new religion. It can be challenging today with the spiritual buffet offered up by so many branches of Christendom. Like Ravi and the Rolex watches, it can be confusing with all the “genuine fakes” and the “fake fakes”. Much of Christendom today has enough truth to look Christian, but is really a cheap imitation or copy.

Common to all the counterfeits is the denial of the basic and central truth of Christianity – Jesus Christ, His person and work. At the root of every cult is a denial of some aspect of the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ. Either His full deity or his real humanity or some aspect of His work of salvation.

The best, better yet, the only way to avoid false teaching is to immerse yourself in the Word of God, “the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3). Read it – prayerfully, repeatedly, thoughtfully, submissively, and entirely! Become familiar with what it says and teaches and then when the false presents itself you will notice it immediately, instinctively.

Reading about Grace, I was directed towards a lovely section from David Jeremiah's book, Captured by Grace. Using the Hymn Amazing Grace he traces the outlines of God's loving kindness towards the hymn's author, John Newton, and the Apostle Paul, the author of much of the New Testament. The following lines show how, as A.W. Tozer explains, in God mercy and grace are one; but as they reach us they are seen as two, related but not identical.As mercy is God’s goodness confronting human misery and guilt, so grace is His goodness directed toward human debt and demerit.

Grace and Mercy

Kick off was a blast on our first day of High Power Soccer and SonQuest Rainforest at Northside Bible Chapel in Barrie, Ontario. 56 kids enjoyed a full morning of soccer drills, crafts and a Bible lesson. Seeing Shawna and the others in the Rainforest skit was amazing. The memory verse for today was Psalm 119:11 - I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. The Lesson of Obscurity

Charles Spurgeon preached to thousands in London each Lord’s Day, yet he started his ministry by passing out tracts and teaching a Sunday school class as a teenager. When he began to give short addresses to the Sunday school, God blessed his ministry of the Word. He was invited to preach in obscure places in the country side, and he used every opportunity to honor the Lord. He was faithful in the small things, and God trusted him with the greater things. “I am perfectly sure,” he said, “that, if I had not been willing to preach to those small gatherings of people in obscure country places, I should never have had the privilege of preaching to thousands of men and women in large buildings all over the land.

Remember our Lord’s rule, “whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.”

The King’s Speech

I recently saw and enjoyed the film The King's Speech. It was about the special relationship between Albert, Duke of York and his speech therapist Lionel Loguo, who treated his severe stammer. They became lifelong friends and reminded me of another King and His friends. Before his coronation, The King informed the bishop that his therapist Lionel would be attending. The Bishop protested, explaining that it would be virtually impossible to have him included as a guest. “He will be with me in the Kings’ box”, was the monarch’s reply. “But that is reserved only for family”, the bishop responded. “That,” the King said, “is exactly why he will be there”. His therapist was not royalty, just a commoner and not even qualified as a speech therapist, but he was the King’s friend and he was treated as if he were family. Jesus said “You are my friends” (John 15:13). The Bible declares of believers in Christ that they are “heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ” (Romans 8:17). We have no claim to royalty as members of Adam’s fallen race, but being born again into the God’s family, He has “made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ”, (Ephesians 2:6). He is the King and we are ‘in the King’s box’!

Caye Caulker, Go Slow... so reads the landing as you get off the boat on the little Island off the coast of Belize. But before we get to our last day, please allow me to share how the rest of the mission unfolded.
The combined Canadian/Belize youth enjoyed 4 days of VBS with the children of 8 Miles. There were over 50 in attendance by the end of the week. On Thursday night a special meeting was held for the parents and to award the kids their prizes and awards. The little chapel was packed with some standing outside. After a recap of the week's activities everyone enjoyed a slide show. By the roar of laughter and squeels it was obvious the kids got a real charge out of seeing themselves on the big screen. On Tuesday and Wednesday nights the team joined the saints at in Boom and Belize City again for their midweek prayer meetings. Sean spoke on Psalm 19 and Nico sang a wonderful song. On Wednesday Ed Plett shared a message from Colossians 1 and emphasized the need to pray for one another. After some fellowship and refreshments, the young people all met at the town basketball court for some hoops. The Canadians were schooled! It was way too hot, but enthusiasm and adrenaline took over as half the assembly played until 11 p.m. It was a very special time for the Belizean youth to share 'their game' with us Canadians. I think the score would have been different had we played floor hockey!
Today was our last day and we went to Caye Caulker. The pictures below show the surf and sun, the beauty of a tiny Island just a 50 minute water taxi ride from the city. It was a perfect way to end our two week youth mission to Belize. Our bags are just about packed and already exuberant stories and memories abound. In just a few days the Portal Village team members will share their report. I am confident that they will take their experience home and it will impact them and others for the glory of God.

Since our last update...
Every now and then the steady hum... whir.. of the 12000 BTU window AC unit and various fans are interrupted by the squawk of a Perot, bark of dogs or the roar of a bus rumbling down the road. Most of the team is flaked out, completely exhausted and recharging. The little AC unit just makes the apartment a little more bearable. The activity would not normally wear out energetic youth, but the extreme heat and humidity sap you of all vitality. The siesta after today's first day of VBS was a welcomed break after the last few days.
The movie night was a great success with almost 100 in attendance at Bethany Chapel in Boom to view To Save A Life. The team joined the saints at Boom on Sunday and shared ministry in song and from the Word morning and evening.
On Saturday the combined youth left early in the morning for the 2 hour drive to Xunantunich, some Mayan ruins near the Guatemala border. After some sandwhiches and lots of cold drinks the team went to the Cave Ranch River for a guided tour. We walked through the jungle along the river then rode on inner tubes on the river through a series of caves, some of which were a mile long! (The first photo is of Thirza with a new friend - not poisonous of course!)
This morning the youth from Boom met us at 8 Miles where we held day 1 of VBS. Thirty seven kids came and enjoyed meeting the Canadians and playing the games. We had to improvise a bit as it was too hot to be outside - the first time I've seen kids not play soccer because it was too hot!

BelCan Youth Mission -- Boom & Western Paradise

The pictures below show progress of our BelCan (Belize/Canada)youth mission to Belize, and just maybe how incredibly hot it is here. The work project at Grace Primary was completed. The young people worked so hard to clean out 5 classrooms, paint and wash windows and desks. It was hard work, but everyone had fun painting and getting to know each other. The team attended prayer meetings at Grace Chapel in Belize City and Burrell Boom and participated with testimonies and ministry in song. On Thursday the BelCan team gathered for prayer at Bethany Chapel in Boom before door-to-door work. The team then fanned out across the town distributing tracts and flyers advertising the movie that will be shown tonight in Boom. The Velasquez's treated the team to delicious local dishes including Gibnut. Then, in the evening all the youth met for a rally in Boom. Today the team gathered again, this time in the town of Western Paradise to distribute flyers for the VBS to be held next week.One of the shots below show Ed and Richard going door-to-door. After a little down time to recharge, the Canadian youth are organizing the VBS program for next week and then we will go to Boom to show the film "To Save A Life". Canada/Belize Youth Mission 2010 (Day 1)

Greetings from Belize! The Canadian youth mission 2010 is underway! Below is an early report from one of the leaders. I've posted some photos of the 1st day of work at Grace Primary School in Belize city.

Hi there! Here we are in HOT & HUMID Belize City. Our flights went well, we arrived just before noon on Saturday. Long lineup at customs; they almost made us pay extra for the Bibles & VBS prizes we had brought along, but we told them it was for kids meetings at Grace Primary, and that was the key (it's a well-known, reputable school here) - so they waved us through. Our host was there to pick us up. We had a Belizean fast food lunch, stopped by the school, did some grocery shopping, then headed to the home where we are staying. Everyone got to bed fairly early Sat. night.
Sunday we spent the day with the Burrell Boom assembly - morning & evening meetings, and we spent the afternoon with one of the families from the assembly.
Must run - it's 7:00 am and they're waiting for me so we can start our morning devotions, then breakfast and off to the school.

Belize Medical Mission - Day 1

"Lord, thank you for this awesome opportunity to be missionaries to these people!" This was Ethan's prayer, giving thanks for supper this evening. Ethan is Dr. Paszko's 14 yr old son who is part of our medical team in Belize this week. Ethan's little prayer reminded me of the thrill that flows through you when you experience contact with another culture with the gospel - there's no substitute!
Working at the community center in Burrell Boom, a rural community 20 minutes from Belize City, the team attended to 81 patients. At station 1, Pam and Laura received patients and took vitals. Then patients were seen by Dr. Paszko from New York.
At the third station Bill and sometimes myself provided a check up for the soul. We tried to see if there was any way we or the Christians at Bethany Chapel could help with spiritual matters. We asked if they attended a local church or if they had a Bible. We shared simply from John's gospel how the Lord Jesus came to heal us of our greatest disease, sin. The last station, the pharmacy, was run by Mrs. Paszko. The team has basic medicines including antibiotics to give them. By 5 pm the doctor was dead tired and we called it a day. Tomorrow we plan to hold a special outdoor meeting in the park for everyone.

The Testimony of the Brethren Assemblies in Belize: A Brief Historical Outline
(Roy Campbell in early 1998 wrote the introduction below. The rest of the information was taken from letters written by himself, Sydney Sauerlender, Harold Wildish or Ralph Clark)

An Introduction
By way of an explanation as to how I came to be identified with that country on the Caribbean shore of Central America, then called British Honduras. I believe a brief word of introduction is appropriate. A long sequence of events in my life led to a firm decision to serve the Lord on a full-time basis wherever He wanted me. I was still in my twenties and fully entrenched in a business career when “the call” came. Two doors of opportunity lay open before me: The first in Tegucigulpa in the Republic of Honduras. The other was Belize in what was then British Honduras. As a young single worker it was thought more appropriate to begin, at any rate, our overseas ministry in Honduras, an old and fairly well manned mission field with many families with whom I could work and master the language – Spanish. Belize, on the other hand had no assemblies of Brethren.

The date was the first of March 1950. It was high noon and very bright and sunny. A noisy motor boat which plied between the SS Caymania, anchored in the Belize Harbor and the then British Honduras Customs, carried a couple of young men who were to see this lively country for the first time in their lives. The two men were Roy Campbell and Albert Karram, a Christian businessman and a friend who took time off to accompany the other on the voyage over and then stayed two weeks. There was no one to meet us nor did we expect anyone since, of course, we knew no one. We came as totally unknown quantities from Kingston, Jamaica but were soon to be surprised and overwhelmed by the warmth and frequency of good hospitality.

In those first couple of weeks the immediate need was to see and to learn all we could. The Lord, without delay, was at work opening doors of opportunity to see much of this interesting country and to meet people from many walks of life. We obtained board and lodging in Belize City and, travelling by bus or with merchandise on trucks, visited Burrell Boom, Corozal, El Cayo and Stann Creek.

Back in the city we quickly got to know a young couple and their family who opened their home to us for evening Bible classes. Lloyd Longworth, the husband, was a professing Christian and his wife Connie was not, but was promptly pointed to Christ during one of the Bible classes to which some of their relatives were invited. Then we sought and obtained permission to hold an open-air gospel meeting in the town square – the “battlefield” as it was cheerfully called.

Sydney Sauerlender arrived from Jamaica in May 1950 to help for a time in the work. Together the two young men conducted meetings on Albert St. in Yarborough in a small rented shop, fixed up as a chapel. ON October 1 of that year they had their first baptism of two. Immediately after the baptism, they met for the first time to remember the Lord. There were just six at the Breaking of Bread service, but it was a most precious occasion.

Harold Wildish wrote from Belize in May 1951 that there were around forty in the Sunday School and for the special evening services the chapel was filled. Many stood and listened outside. Ten weeks of instruction classes for new converts followed the meetings with Mr. Wildish. On Sunday, June 24 a gathering of about 150 people stood on the beach for a short open air meeting. They witnesses seven believers publicly confess their Lord by baptism in a rather rough sea. Afterward thirteen gathered to remember and to worship the Lord.

A boy’s camp was conducted during the last week of August at Crooked Tree. Sydney Sauerlender and Roy Campbell camped with fourteen boys, while a young man employed as camp cook kept them happily alive. Four or five responded to the invitation to confess the Lord as Saviour and after returning to the city one or two others expressed decisions for Christ.

February 10, 1952 was the commencement date of the first gospel campaign with Mr. and Mrs. Harold Wildish, Mr. and Mrs. W.J. (Bill) Patterson, Roy Gustafson and Roy Campbell. It was held in a big wooden tent called the Tabernacle not far from the Governor’s residence. The attendance numbered around one thousand nightly for the months of February and March. During the Christian Challenge Crusade they shared the gospel message in schools, the theater, the prison, on the radio, on the street and among the thousands of softball fans on the sport field, indeed wherever the had opportunity. As a result the size of the assembly was doubled. Sidney Calcraft and Sylva Channer came over from Jamaica to help with the follow-up. They followed up five hundred enquirers. On May 4 they had their first baptism after the crusade. Eighteen were baptized in the sea.

They performed the first assembly wedding after the Lord ’s Supper June 29. Then after the Sunday school they had a baptism at the sea where eleven followed the Lord. The speaker for this service was Dr. Ian Sharpe, a young English army doctor serving with the British troops in Belize. He and his family later went to Belgian Congo as missionaries where the whole family was brutally murdered. Early December 1952 work was commenced on the foundation of the new chapel. They baptized two more on the seventh day of that month.

The new Grace Chapel was opened on March 16, 1953. At that time around forty people were in fellowship. Sunday school attendance was around ninety and between one hundred and fifty and three hundred attended gospel services. Mr. and Mrs. Wildish flew over from Jamaica for the opening and stayed for two weeks of gospel and ministry meetings. The first baptismal service in Grace Chapel was conducted May 28 when seven believers were baptized. The assembly now numbered about fifty and the Sunday school attendance about eighty. In October, George DaCosta of Jamaica held some special gospel meetings and around eighty made professions of faith.

The year of 1954 saw the commencement of the day school with the first three grades. Ms. Gloria Smith from Jamaica was one of the first teachers. Roy Campbell visited Canada and the US early that year mainly to look for a qualified teacher to serve as principal for the new school in Belize City. Contact was made with Ralph and Gladys Clark in Winnipeg and they arrived in Belize with their three children the next year.

In February 1955, Bram Reed from Ontario, Canada came for a gospel campaign. The work began in Gales Point the same year. Roy Campbell conducted the first gospel campaign that summer. From those meetings six men were saved and baptized. The first Breaking of Bread service was celebrated late in that year in the dance hall!

The work in Cinderella Town had been envisioned from the beginning and to that end land had been obtained. It had been considered wiser to work in the area of Grace Chapel first. When the assembly at Grace Chapel was well established, it was decided that it was time to begin in Cinderella Town. During 1955 children’s meetings, open-air services and house-to-house visitations were started in the area. They held a tent campaign on the site where the new chapel was to stand.

In 1956 Mr. Wildish came in March for his fourth visit. By then there were 70 students in Grace Primary School, which, at that time, used the downstairs area of Grace Chapel. Small groups also were meeting in Burrell Boom and Gales Point although they had no building of their own then.

In August 1958, some fifteen young persons professed to have received the Lord as their Saviour at the annual Youth For Christ crusade. Bill Longsworth and Irvine Robinson were the speakers during the eight nights of the crusade. Grace Chapel had a splendid and growing group of young people in their teens and twenties. Work commenced on the building in Cinderella Town with the pouring of concrete for the foundations July 26. Twelve believers were breaking break at Burrell Boom. The new chapel was being used, although incomplete.

June 17, 1959 marked the opening of Berea Bible Chapel in Cinderella Town. They recorded the opening half hour of the dedicatory service which was later broadcast to a wide Sunday night audience over the local radio. station. A team of eight elders from the assemblies in Kingston, Jamaica came over for the occasion. Mr. Leonard King of Trinidad followed afterwards in August. September brought much needed reinforcements with the arrival of Gloria Edwards from Jamaica. She took charge of the primary school, and so released Ralph Clark for other responsibilities. They were hoping to start a high school in early 1961.

Supplementary Notes:

After Hurricane Hattie in 1961 much time was taken up with relief and restoration efforts. Due to increasing health problems Roy Campbell left Belize in early April 1962. He made a visit in 1963 and took part in the opening of the new school building. He also visited briefly at the end of 1965.

In August 1966 Roy Campbell married Eunice Timm who had come to Belize in July 1962. They returned to Belize in October of 1966 and stayed until June 1968.

My connection to the shores of Belize began in 2004. Dr. Ted Kay (former vice president of Missionary Service Committee Canada) invited me to accompany him and two other men, Jim Elliot (Ajax, ON) and Bill Coffee (Brantford, ON) on a short-term fact finding mission and ministry trip to Belize. I had worked in neighboring Guatemala for six years with my family. The team of four visited assemblies and ministered in Belize City, Burrell Boom, and The Valley. A small outreach was also taking root in Eight Miles Community just outside of Belize City. We also visited Corozal to the north where there used to be a small work. Since that initial visit I have been leading one or two teams a year to assist in the work. Usually teams of 12 people and for 2 week periods helped with construction, children’s work, sports camps and gospel campaigns. In January 2010 Garnet and Gwen Cooney accompanied me for a week long gospel campaign in Belize City. Three people accepted the Lord at these meetings. Our first medical mission is planned for April 2010.

Our January mission to Belize was quite an adventure. Hitting the streets of Belize city with Garnet and Mr. Cain was an amazing experience. Most people were very receptive to the gospel. Many people are desperate, unhappy, addicted, lonely, broke, confused, without direction, in conflict or just bored. One person said, "Thank you for bringing me hope". The gospel meetings were well attended and three people responded to the gospel by coming forward to accept Christ.

A New Beginning with Christ

This is our 4th visit to the Whites, Wycliffe missionary friends from our time in Guatemala. A 15 hour drive, through the night and over the Virginia mountains and here we are in North Corolina. Here in Waxhaw it is cold and wet outside and cozy and warm inside. There is a dog on the couch beside me and a fire burning in the living room. Grant is playing on the floor beside a big Christmas tree and the girls are out shopping (what else would they be doing!?). I don't mind as it gives me chance to curl up with a good book. I also thought this would be a good opportunity to bring our blog out of cyber wilderness and begin posting again. In just a few weeks I will be going on another short term mission to Belize and will try and keep our e-friends more up to date. So, I'm going to close this laptop, get on the outside of a beautiful cup of java and turn some pages... What is the book? I've just started If God is Good by Randy Alcorn. The review will have to wait for another entry...

As mentioned by The New York Times, “The Bible that Lincoln was sworn in on was not the family Bible, which was packed away with his family’s belongings still en route from Springfield. So William Thomas Carol, Clerk of the Supreme Court, bought this Bible specifically for Lincoln’s swearing in ceremony on March 4, 1861.”

With millions of others around the world I watched as Obama became the 44th president of the USA. I was amazed to see the actual Bible that was used for Lincoln's Oath of office. (It was an Oxford by the way).
In my reading this morning I came across this: "When Queen Victoria was asked the secret of England's greatness, she took down a copy of the scriptures and said, ""This Book explains the power of Great Britain.""

What a great reminder that we and our neighbors built our nations on faith in God and His Word! Let's get BACK TO THE BIBLE!

I thought this would be a good way to end 08 and bring in 09. We attended the New Year's Gala dinner at Northside Bible Chapel tonight (the roast beef was exquisite! Thanks Gary & Lois!), and Noel played a rendition of the above song on his clarinet at the end. I asked about four people what "Auld Lang Syne" meant and they all shrugged their shoulders. So according to www.en.wikipedia.org this is what it means:

"Auld Lang Syne" is a Scottish poem written by Robert Burns in 1788 and set to the tune of a traditional folk song (Roud # 6294). It is well known in many English-speaking countries and is often sung to celebrate the start of the new year at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Day.

The song's (Scots) title may be translated into English literally as "old long since", or more idiomatically, "long long ago"[1] or "days gone by". The phrase "Auld Lang Syne" is also used in similar poems by Robert Ayton (1570–1638), Allan Ramsay (1686-1757), and James Watson (1711) as well as older folk songs predating Burns.[2] In his retelling of fairy tales in the Scots language, Matthew Fitt uses the phrase "In the days of auld lang syne" as the equivalent of "Once upon a time." In Scots syne is pronounced like the English word sign.

In just about an hour we will say goodbye to 2008 and welcome 2009. As we do, we will thank God for all His faithfulness and blessing and trust Him with the future. After all, He holds it! God bless you and see you next year!

The Pony Express Bible

The history of the pony Express forms a fascinating part of the history of the American West. These dedicated and resourceful riders carried the mail from St. Joseph, Missouri, over nineteen hundred miles through dangerous Indian country, to Sacramento, California. The Pony Express acquired five hundred of the strongest and fastest horses the company could find. Incredibly, forty brave men rode these magnificent horses in relays with each man riding fifty miles to the next stations. Using four relays per day, the Pony Express riders traveled up to two hundred miles a day. A letter could be delivered in relays covering the complete nineteen hundred miles in only ten days.

In order to cut down on any unnecessary weight the riders would use the lightest saddles made, with very small, flat leather bags holding the mail. Amazingly, to cut down on the weight the riders carried no rifles. Mail carried by the Pony Express was written on very thin paper. However, the postage rate was $5 an ounce (equal to $200 per letter in today’s currency). The managers of the Pony Express believed that the Holy Scriptures were so important that they presented a special full size Pony Express Bible to each rider when they signed up to join this unusual company. Surprisingly, despite their overwhelming concern for reducing the weight of their rider’s equipment, every one of the riders carried a full size Pony Express Bible as part of his regular gear.

Auburn Youth at Burrell Boom - Day 2

The Auburn youth enjoyed the challenge of the excellent turnout for VBS at Burrell Boom. Fourteen kids from a neighboring village have brought the number of campers to over 60. The children practiced with drills and played lively games. Esther taught origami and the team is sharing Bible stories through skits. The children who are usually quite rambunctious were riveted to their seats as Chance, Jessie, Amy, Jeff, Rylan and Derry acted out the story of Adam and Eve. The memory verses helped to reinforce the lesson. Tomorrow we will be inviting the parents to a special evening of awards, special music and a movie. Soccer Camp at Burrel Boom - Day 1

Just a quick note to update today's progress. Over 60 kids came out to the first day of soccer camp at Burrel Boom, a little community about 1/2 hour outside of Belize City. The youth from Auburn Bible Chapel in Peterborough, Ontario and leaders Jeff, Derry & Esther are doing a great job teaching the kids 'futball', crafts and the good news of the gospel. Hopefully we'll get a chance to post a few photos tomorrow. Thank you for visiting our blog and please remember us in prayer.

Final day of tournaments and the Chronicles of Narnia

Team two is just getting ready to go to Burrel Boom to be with the saints at Bethany Chapel where we will hold the VBS and sprots camps this week. Below are a few shots of the final day of basketball in Belize City as well as the movie night. Last night we projected the Chronicles of Narnia, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe and over 80 people attended. It was special to share with the young people how Jesus, the Lion of the tribe of Judah died for us and rose again, just like Aslan in the story. Mr. Tumnis said to Lucy, "After all, He's not a tame Lion", to which she replied, "But He is good." He is good and it is a joy to serve Him.

Team 2 (Be Strong Belize) Day 1

It's midnight in Belize and the heat is not letting up. The fans are humming and the dogs outside are quiet for now... Team two ran the second last day of basketball games in Belize City. The tournament has generated quite a bit of interest as the local news station came and interviewed us. It was so cool to watch ourselves on the evening news when we got home from the movie. Tomorrow we will have the final day, the last prizes and a special evening of singing, testimonies and a movie again.

This afternoon, after a quick swim to cool off, the team headed to Burrel Boom to hand out flyers door-to-door. We stopped at the court where the team will have the hoops component of the camp next week. Before long there were a few locals and Jeff and Chance played a couple of games. We are looking forward to working in Boom next week. Praise the Lord for His guidance and protection all along the way. Hi to all our friends in blogland,

This post is going to have to be photoless and we're sorry we did not get a report in for the last couple of days. Just as soon as we can we'll give a complete update. Right now we just dropped off the first team at the airport. We've gased up, bought 15 gallons of bottled water and we're just about to go and pick up team two.
The first team finished the basketball tournament and then showed the film, Facing the Giants. There was a great turnout with over 50 in attendance. The film was projected outdoors in the courtyard of Grace Primary School. Many of the youth from the tournament came and enjoyed the film. The team sang some special numbers and Sean gave a brief word of testimony. After the movie everyone enjoyed a sandwich and drink.
Yesterday the team spent their last day in Belize at Cay Cualker. A 45 minute boat ride takes you up the coast to a tiny island right on the second largest barrier reef in the world. Instead of trying to describe it for you I will try and post some photos later.
So, please pray for the teams as they pass each other somewhere over the Gulf of Mexico. Jeremy and Rachel are here with me which makes it a bit easier for me as Vera my bride has gone home with the first team. Thank you all for your prayers and support. We remain your servants for Christ's sake.

Basketball Tournament - Belize City Day 1

Day one of our very first basketball camp featured some spectacular play by the youth of Belize City. Both Canadian teams are running two day tournaments. We were not sure how many would show up or how it would go, but by mid morning there were 5 teams playing under the blazing sun. Tomorrow evening, after the results are all in, we plan a special outdoor meeting for awards, singing and testimonies and the movie "Facing the Giants".

The city of Belize has given team Canada use of the court free of charge. Located directly behind Grace Primary School, it is ideal for outreach to the community.

Team Canada is snoring once again...and do they need a rest! From early morning 'til late at night, days are jammed with activity and ministry. The photos below highlight unforgettable moments: soccer camp, youth meetings, Mayan ruins and awards night at 8 Miles. The campers used their hard earned points for prizes and the MVPs were awarded brand new soccer balls! Our program, BIBLES FOR BELIZE, began with distribution of 70 Gideon New Testaments given to every child in attendance. The 108 people enjoyed hamburgers, special music and a movie.
Tomorrow the team has a full day planned to visit a number of assemblies in Belize City, Burrel Boom and the work at 8 Miles again.

Team Canada arrived back at the Leslies late last night after prayer meeting at Burrel Boom. Just as we shut the van off the power went out so we just fell into bed, exhausted. So, our blog had no entry.
The soccer camp at 8 Mile has been wonderful. Over 50 kids have been attending. Tomorrow is the last day and then we plan a barbecue and gospel film for the parents. Here are a few shots from the last couple of days. As you can see the kids are having lots of fun and the team is working well together. One of the biggest challenges has been keeping the water bottles filled and re-filled as it is blazing hot and humid!

Be Ready Belize (Team Canada 1) Day One - Cave Ranch River

Day one began with morning devotions. Our verse was 1 Peter 3:15, our theme verse for Team 1: "...Be ready to give an answer to everyone that asks for a reason for the hope that is in you..." Most of the first day was planned so that the Canadian team could get acquainted with the Belizean youth that joined our team. It was a rough start as the van that belongs to Grace Chapel broke down! We had to rent a second vehicle for a day to ensure that the young people from Belize could join us. It was a late start but we finally made it to Jaguar Paw, a park about 50 kms outside of the city. This park includes cave tubing on the Cave Ranch River. The team hiked up river for about an hour and then floated through caves, one of which was over a kilometer long! It was so refreshing; the water was crystal clear and we had a picnic on the river bank.
In the afternoon the team, now about 20 people with our new friends, fanned out all over 8 Miles Community with flyers advertising the soccer camp and VBS. It was very special to meet some of our young friends, some of whom the youth mission of 2006 worked with. Then we all went to Grace Chapel for prayer meeting. The team sang some special pieces together and Rob Armstrong shared his testimony. After a good visit we went to "Lee Chees Chicken", a very popular fried chicken take out. So we ate supper at 9 pm at a park by the Caribean Sea! It was a great way to end a very full day. As I write this note the team is sleeping.... I'm hoping that the roosters don't start crowing too early!

Back in Belize

Most of us are drenched with sweat but we are settled in with our wonderful hosts Alan and Olive Leslie and everyone is resting after a long day of flights. Thank you for praying. Bibles For Belize

In the last year or so I have been collecting Bibles.... all kinds of Bibles! Used Bibles, study Bibles, Gideon Bibles, Bibles from Goodwill. I just finished counting them: 219! They are part of "Bibles For Belize", a part of our short-term youth mission to Belize. In just a few days we will be taking off for Belize. The Bibles will be distributed during our VBS and basketball tournaments. The youth group in Peterborough that make up Team 2 have also raised funds to purchase and collect Bibles.

The Lord blessed us with beautiful weather so far and the children are enjoying the activities. Since I am helping with the soccer component I don't have pics of the crafts etc. But we will get them up too. Thanks to all those who are praying for High Power Soccer. Air under pressure, paintballs, outdoor terrain, high energy youth - all the ingredients for an unforgettable Saturday. It was my first time paintballing. The young people from Northside Bible Chapel and some from Hillside Bible chapel joined together for the day at Wasaga Beach Paintball. It was hot, I lost a lense from my glasses and I got a hit a few times, but it was really really fun. This is a shot of "arm bands" and "non-armbands" at Blackhawk Town, one of the many areas for battle.

Many of you may have heard of the Cross Canada Cruisers. A group of men are taking the gospel from shore to shore (actually two teams starting at each end of the country and meeting in Ontario) in old classic cars. I had the chance to meet and pray with some of these men and I met Jay while speaking in Tavistock. Here is his first report...(Be sure to park your mouse at their website www.crosscanadacuiser.com)

"Greetings in the name of our Father through our Lord Jesus Christ,

I arrived to Vancouver BC this past saturday. From there I took one of
the BC ferries across to Victoria island. The view from the ferry was
honestly one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.

This week we are being taught the book of romans by John Allen, and we
are working with Tim Hood in our outreach. We have our teaching on
romans at the assembly out here (westview gospel chapel) every morning.

The first major outreach was had was the Victorian Day parade. I was
again amazed at the ability these classic cars have and their ability
to 'attract' a crowd. Especially the 56 mercury montclair with glass
packed dual mufflers, that I have been privileged to drive :-) The
parade lasted about 4 hours, and we were able to distribute just shy
of 6000 'worlds biggest lie' cds. Many of the people that received the
cd's were appreciative and polite, and nobody really gave us any
opposition. Tuesday night we went downtown Victoria to the parliament
buildings. I ended up talking to a couple by the name of Mike and
Nicole for about 45 mins about spiritual things. Pray for Mike and
Nicole. They are very interested, but are still somewhat resistant to
God's perfect plan of salvation.

This friday and saturday we will be going down by the water to watch
and witness at a boat race. We plan to park the cars right on the
dock, and allow people to come and check out the cars, while trying to
work the gospel into the conversations. Pray for the hearts of these
people, most people are very receptive to talk to us, but when we turn
the conversation to spiritual things, are usually quick to end it or
leave.

I would write more, but as you can see...I'm not very good at this
whole letter writing thing,

5 Pillars of Missions

Matthew 9:35-38 (New International Version)

35Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field."

Some years ago I was at a Missionary Prayer Breakfast and heard a missionary, Sid Halsband who serves in Africa but is very sick right now. I still remember the substance of his message. From this passage he pointed out at least 5 principles for missions. It's really a study of the heart of Jesus.

1. The Lord was motivated by Love and Compassion for people.
2. His primary work was Preaching and Teaching.
3. He also was healing and aiding those who were suffering. (not cold and removed)
4. Recognition of the Lord of the Harvest.
5. A call for fervent prayer for laborers (not just preachers!)

You either go or send a substitute! There are those who go and preach and those who stay and pray. Those on the front lines are dependent on the supply lines, like those in the Battle for Bagdad during the Gulf War II.

Ontario Worker's and Elder's Conference 2008

Vera and me just enjoyed a good part of the week at the 16th annual Worker's and Elder's Conference, hosted this year by Markham Bible Chapel. The theme this year was "Christ in the Old Testament".

Christ in the Law of Moses - Randy Amos

Christ in the Psalms - Harry Graham

I particularly enjoyed Willie's treatment of Christ in the Prophets. He showed us from various sections of the prophets four main points, how they spoke of:

1. Christ - The Eternity of His Being (Isaiah 6; Micah 5:2 etc.)
2. Christ - His Incarnation (Genesis 3:15; Isaiah 7:14 etc.)
3. Christ - The Perfect Servant of Jehovah (Servant songs of Isaiah, 42:1-7; 45; 50:4-10; 52:13-53)
4. Christ - The Sovereign (Isaiah 9:6 etc.)

There were seminars on various topics such as Encouraging the Next Generation, The Spirit of the Age and Missions.

Keith Keyser ministered from Philippians on the last day and I was challenged by the illustration which I've heard before about the last words of William Booth, the founder of The Salvation Army. From his deathbed he sent a note to many who were eager to hear what he would say with his last breath. The note was delivered and on it was just one word "OTHERS"! May the Lord help us to have that attitude, the attitude of Christ (Philippians 2:5)

Todayf I enjoyed some fresh scrambled eggs and some of the best suasages I've ever tasted. It was a regular men's breakfast held at Heidelberg Bible Fellowship and I was to share my testimony of how I became a Christian. The gentleman beside me was the mayor! It's been over 20 years since I surrendered my life to the Lord in the wee hours of the morning one August, but I am still marveling at God's grace. I was almost ready to give up on living but God revealed Himself to me by His Word

FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD THAT HE GAVE HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON, THAT WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM SHOULD NOT PERISH BUT HAVE EVERLASTING LIFE.

Easter Weekend in Belize

Bump bump...bang.. bang...rumble...rumble.BUMP! That's how the bus ride was going down the old wash-board highway towards Hopkins. I accompanied the young people from several churches on their annual Easter Monday day of fun in the sun at the beach. Before we dashed into the Sea we read Luke 5 and the account of how Jesus used Peter's fishing boat as a pulpit to teach the people. Then, after a huge catch of fish and "networking" with his partners, Peter heard these words from the Master: "from now on you will catch men" (!).
It was a nice way to wrap up a long weekend of conference time and ministry. The sports day at 8 Miles was amazing with about 65 people in attendance! 8 Miles is where previous teams renovated the building and held a vacation Bible school. I have one more meeting in the city before I fly home on Wednesday. Thank you for your prayers!

Jonah the Pouting Prophet

Even people who have never read the Bible have laughed at a joke or two about "Jonah and the whale". I have been ejoying another look at the minor prophet and post a few thoughts now...

Jonah has 4 chapters but two main sections (See 1:1 with 3:1)

I. The Disobedience of Jonah (1-2)
II. The Obedience of Jonah (3-4).

Jonah has many layers. He is unique - only prophet sent to Gentiles; only Prophet whose prophecy consists in what happened to him, not what he said (see 3:8, only 8 words of prophecy); only prophet to whom Jesus directly compares Himself (Matthew 12:40). Jonah is a good Missionary handbook, reminding Isreal and us of the job to share God's love with all the world, even our enemies! Jonah is about the love of God and how we share it and the will of God and how we respond to it.

Jonah's experience reminds us that the LORD is the God of the second chance. Jonah's story is that of the prophet of a broken ministry. Jonah never really gets it right. Even when he obeys, he pouts and sulks. As you read the little book you will find yourself being drawn into the story.

Baptism at Northside

Humble opologies for neglecting you, our faithful blog readers... if you are reading this, it is testimony that you have faith that someday we are going to update it, and, lo, and behold (don't you love that word!?), we have!

The year is 'wearing away', and before we know it, we will be decorating trees (if you install the "pagan bush" as a friend once called it) and waiting in long lines to purchase gifts for our loved ones. When you find yourself in such a position, remember this: "Jesus is the Reason for the Season!".

Until then, allow us to update you on the Christianity Explored Course and recent ministry.

On Wednesday we will hold our tenth and final session of CE. About 20 or so of us (the children have thier own program in the "upper room") will sit down to enjoy another meal and then complete our study of Christianity from Mark's gospel. Some of the paricipants are counting the cost of becoming followers of Jesus Christ.

On Sunday there will be a baptism at Northside. One of the young people has decided to follow Christ in the waters of baptism. "Trust and obey, for there's no other way, to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey."

Afganada

A young lady who is the daughter of a lady at our assembly is working for Samaratin's purse in Afghanistan. Now and then she has visited our church and shared with us about the work that they are doing there. This time they brought some typical dress for the Sunday School to try on! Here are Jeremy and Rachel...well, we can tell it's Jeremy anyways. We thank God for what He is doing in the hearts of many in Afganistan.

Bibles for Belize

We are planning our next mission, an evangelistic Youth Mission, for August 13-22, 2008 (Aprox)and we'd like to emphasize the importance of the Word of God. Dr. Jones and Mr. Ford

Dr. Martin Lloyd Jones tells a story. One day he was driving to his church in his Model T Ford and it broke down. Dr. Jones had about as much mechanical aptitude as I do and, being late for an appointment, he was beside himself. He lifted the hood, but he didn't know where to start. People were passing by, but no one stopped. Finally, one couple approached him and asked, "What is the trouble?" He responded, "I do not know, it doesn't work."
"Do you want me to take a look?" the other man asked him. "Absolutely!" he replied. The man looked briefly, touched a wire, turned a lever and then said, "Give it a try."
Dr. Jones gave it one crank and it immediately started. "Thank you so much," he said. "My name is Martin Lloyd Jones."
The man smiled and said, "Good to meet you. My name is Henry Ford."

I really got a chuckle out of this story, but it makes us think too. Remember, God, our Creator, knows us inside out and we would be foolish not to ask for His help in this life. He even gave us the manual - The Bible!

Honk Honk!

Have you looked outside lately? The seasons are changing. I like the sound of Canada geese honking; it gives me a nice feeling inside. I don't know why, but some time ago I learned a facinating lesson about these amazing animals....

Think of migrating birds that fly in a formation. Those who study bird behavior tell us there is a reason for this. They fly faster because the ones in front break the wind for those coming behind. Those in the lead get tired sooner, but the ones that follow can fly with less effort.
You may have noticed them chattering along. Bird watchers say this is a way of encouraging those that are in the lead so that they keep up the swiftness and don’t slow down – “honk, honk, don’t give up!”
Now, there is something interesting that happens when one of those birds falls to the ground. Two of the strongest and healthiest birds fly down with it and keep it company until its full recovery. Once it is able to fly again, they catch up with the formation, which has reduced its speed for the benefit of those that had to stay behind. God teaches us a powerful lesson through nature. It is amazing to think that many times we who can talk, who can communicate do not make this principle work.

Christianity Explored (CE) at Northside Bible Chapel, Week 1

Last night was the first evening of CE, a ten week course that explores Christianity using the Gospel of Mark. The turnout was very encouraging as about ten guests came out. With the leaders and helpers there were well over 20 people who enjoyed the meal. Jeremy and Rachel and others helped with the Childcare and Homework club, so that participants can bring their children if necessary. Each Wednesday evening we will have group discussion, a DVD series and find out from Mark the answers to three basic questions: who Jesus is, why He came, and what it means to follow Him. By the end of the sixth week participants will have read the whole Gospel of Mark!

Hurricane Update from Belize

This just in from Belize...

"Hello Bro.Sean,

Christian greetings to you and yours,
Just these few words to give you an idea of what's happening here in Belize. Hurricane Dean did pass our way and Corozal was indeed hit hard. People lost their houses , had no food, lost power,lost jobsand were in bad shape generally. No loss of life,however.The Church put togeher some relief supplies in the form of food items and distributed them to the few Believiers in Corozal. No damage done to the structure you put up there in Corozal. Praise the Lord1

However, we are currently expecting another hurricane to hit possibly the center of the country or the southern districts of Belize by early Wednesday of this week. Hurricane Felix is now a category 4 hurricane and is expected to do considerable damage to at least the southern districts of Belize. People are presently being encouraged to seek higher ground before the hurricane makes landfall somewhere between Belize City and Honduras. There are long lines everywhere as people are desperately trying to stock up on food supplies building materials , fuel for their vehicles etc.

In the next few days we might be able to give you some real meaning ful details.

High Power Soccer 07 Wrap-up

Thank the Lord for all High Power team members who gave of their time for all the children who participated in this year's VBS at Northside. Over 50 kids attended the mini-soccer camp held at the chapel and at a nearby school playing field. On Friday most of the parents came for the closing program and a "High Power" barbeque. After all the kids were awarded their hard earned prizes, Jim Comte reviewed what the children learned during the week. The kids learned about heaven from the Word of God and how to get there. Jim reminded everyone present that God sent His only Son to be our Savior and that if we recieve Him by faith we can be sure of sins forgiven and a home in heaven. After a slide show everyone stayed for a BBQ and some freindly matches of soccer, "Parents vs. Kids!" and the team leaders vs. the older kids. Vera who directed the VBS would like to thank everyone who helped and all of you who prayed.
Almost 100 people enjoyed a High Power Barbeque in the Chapel parking lot. The rain stopped during the VBS closing program and the sun came out just in time for the BBQ!

High Power Soccer Day 3

High Power Soccer at Northside Bible Chapel completed day three. 51 children participated on Tuesday and 51 today! Although the area really needs rain, we were glad it did not rain here in Barrie! Campers enjoyed more high power drills and skills and loads of fun. Thank you for praying for our team and for the camp.

Corozal Update...

This just in from Belize...

The Prime Minister has just this morning declared the
Corozal District a disaster area. Praise God however,
there has been no reports of any loss of life. Damages
include down buildings, roof tops gone, lucrateive
papaya crops wiped out plus other agricultural
business. Electricity and water, as we write has not
yet been restored for both the Corozal and OW
Districts. We will be visiting the are shortly to see
in what ways we may be able to help.

Hurricane Dean & Corozal Town, Belize

We are just getting reports now in the news about how poepled fared in Corozal after Hurricane Dean made landfall in Belize. CBC radio reports heavy equipment is clearing debris from the streets. No reports of deaths or injury yet. Just a few months ago a team of 15 from Ontario built a small mission house in Corozal. I'm sure all of us will be very interested to know how folks are there and if the building sustained any damage. Let's remember Belize in our prayers.

Today was Day One of Northside Bible Chapel's High Power Soccer Camp, 2007 here in Barrie. We praise the Lord as 43 kids came the first day! A team of about 15 are running the programe. We have a great coach and several assisstant coaches. The kids are divided into two groups, each having about 1 hour of soccer instruction, including skills and drills. The kids also have crafts and are working hard to gain points through memory work. Please pray for the leaders and for the campers as they have fun and learn about God's love in Christ Jesus.

The O'Byrnes enjoyed a fantastic week at Northland this past week. The sun was shining and the bass were biting! Bob Johnston spoke on the family and Peter gave a series of encouraging messages in the evenings. I'm posting a shot of the dining hall, built by Chester Donaldson ("Mr. D") who started the camp 50 years ago with his wife Marion. There is a 50 year reuinion planned for Sat., Aug. 11.

Today's message at Northside Bible Chapel was on Romans 12:3-8 - Our relationship to oursleves: honest evaluation of our gifts. We looked at the role of attitude. Below are a couple of facinating stories taken from Chuck Swindoll's book Strengthening Your Grip about attitude...

The colorful, nineteenth-century showman and gifted violinist Nicolo Paganini was standing before a packed house, playing through a difficult piece of music. A full orchestra surrounded him with magnificent support. Suddenly one string on his violin snapped and hung gloriously down from his instrument. Beads of perspiration popped out on his forehead. He frowned but continued to play, improvising beautifully.
To the conductor’s surprise, a second string broke. And shortly thereafter, a third. Now there were three limp strings dangling from Paganini’s violin as the master performer completed the difficult composition on the one remaining string. The audience jumped to its feet and in good Italian fashion, filled the hall with shouts and screams, “Bravo! Bravo!” As the applause died down, the violinist asked the people to sit back down. Even though they knew there was no way they could expect an encore, they quietly sand back into their seats.
He held the violin high for everyone to see. He nodded at the conductor to begin the encore and then he turned back to the crowd, and with a twinkle in his eye, he smiled and shouted, “Paganini…and one string!” After that he placed the single-stringed Stradivarius beneath his chin and played the final piece on one sting as the audience (and the conductor) shook their heads in silent amazement. “Paganini… and one string!” And, I might add, an attitude of fortitude.

Dr. Victor Frankle, the bold, courageous Jew who became a prisoner during the Holocaust, endured years of indignity and humiliation by the Nazis before he was finally liberated. At the beginning of his ordeal, he was marched into a Gestapo courtroom. His captors had taken away his home and family, his cherished freedom, his possessions, even his watch and wedding ring. They had shaved his head and stripped his clothing off his body. There he stood before German high command, under the glaring lights being interrogated and falsely accused. He was destitute, a helpless pawn in the hands of brutal, prejudiced, sadistic men. He had nothing. No, that isn’t true. He suddenly realized there was one thing no one could ever take from him – just one. Do you know what it was?
Dr. Frankle realized he still had the power to choose his own attitude. No matter what anyone would ever do to him, regardless of what the future held for him, the attitude choice was his to make. Bitterness or forgiveness, to give up or to go on. Hatred or hope. Determination to endure or the paralysis of self-pity. It boiled down to “Frankle…and one string!”

The single most significant decision I can make on a day-to-day basis is my choice of attitude. It is more important than my past, my education, my bankroll, my success or failures, fame or pain, what other people think of me or say about me, my circumstances, or my position. Attitude is that “single string” that keeps me going or cripples my progress.

If we’re honest we must admit that much of the time we spend concentrating and fretting over the strings that snap, dangle, and pop – the things that can’t be changed – than we do giving attention to the one that remains, our choice of attitude.

6.8 Earthquake off Guatemala

(CNN) -- A 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck Wednesday just off the Pacific coast of Guatemala, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Authorities were evacuating high-rise buildings and homes that might be vulnerable to damage if there were aftershocks, but none had been reported to the USGS so far, the agency's Rafael Abreu told CNN.

The quake struck at 1:29 p.m. (3:29 p.m. ET), about 70 miles from the capital, Guatemala City.

The quake's intensity, according to the USGS, was such that it was also felt in El Salvador.

The quake's epicenter was about 40 miles below the Earth's surface, the USGS said. Earthquakes centered closer to the surface generally can cause more damage.

I remember a quake hitting one day while we lived in Guatemala City. We ran outside and saw powerlines swinging and walls bending. The earth moving under our feet was the strangest sensation I've ever felt; reminded me of how frail we are and how uncertain life is. I think God can use these things to speak to us.

We will be following this story and be on our knees for all our friends in Guatemala.

Enoel Reports on Relief Effort in Bolivia

A short term mission to Bolivia in 2005 introduced me to Enoel Suarez, missionary from/to Bolivia, South America. Enoel and his wife Leisa (Canadian) serve the Lord in Santa Cruz. While on furlough in Canada his poeple suffered some major flooding. With the help of MSC and a couple of brothers he was able to organize a relief mission for a week in April. Northside Bible Chapel collected an offering to add to other funds and we helped him purchase some Physician Travle Packs (PTP). Below is his report of how it went.

Dear Partners in the Lord,

I was seeking a different word to address you; one that describes each and every one of you, but I could not think of another. I arrived from my trip to Bolivia on Friday afternoon and found the family well. I am so excited about how well the trip progressed that I would like to share some of the stories with you.
We ( Bill Letkeman, Len Venne, and I ) left on April the 23rd with four boxes of medicine and two boxes of clothing. Everything was going well until we arrived to Bolivia. As we went through customs, they tried to take the medicine away from us. Perhaps they thought that we might try to sell it, or they may have wanted to sell it themselves. After a long discussion, they finally let us into Bolivia with the medication. We knew that all of you were praying for our trip. We arrived to Santa Cruz on April 24th at nine o'clock in the morning. It took us seven more hours of driving to reach the affected area. I arranged for the purchase of food and clothing ahead of time, so when we arrived it was there. The next day, we sorted out the clothing and food to be distributed.

Our team had been planned out ahead of time, so all of the members met together in Santa Cruz. The team consisted of brother Brad Hallock and his wife, Dr. Placido Mercado, and two others. In Trinidad, three more young, local doctors joined us. They were Dr. Eric, Dr. Virgilio, and Dr. Dario. They accompanied us to the nine villages where we had the opportunity to treat more than five hundred people (including small children) with medication. All of the children received parasite medication, vitamins, and fungus creams. Many people were ill with fungus infections and rashes due to the dirty water. Some of the medical problems we encountered included heart problems, diabetes, and dengue fever. One lady named Rebeca needed heart surgery right away. We were able to help her financially. Another young boy, Sixto, needed some testing done on his heart right away. We were also able to help him. We also assisted a brother named Joaquin Ortiz with diabetes plus two others with dengue fever.

We were able to take almost three tons of food with us. This included main staples like rice, flour, beans, pasta, sugar, cooking oil, etc. We also took 1,200 items of clothing to be distributed. None of this would have happened if you were unwilling to share some of your own with those brothers in need. The help that I received from many of you was a true confirmation that the Lord was leading this project. We are so thankful because many of you, my brothers and sisters, were willing to share the blessings received from God with others. We are not able to find words to express how thankful we are to all of you. You were not just willing to pray, but also to take part by sending some money to those in need. 2 Cor. 8:3-5 says, "
Please continue to pray for those in need. Most of the people have returned to their homes, but they still have great needs. Many need to rebuild their homes and their lives. They are open to the gospel, and we were able to share the Word with them. They once had an evangelical church, but it was destroyed by the flooding. Many of us are busy trying to gain more material possessions, but they just struggle to survive and live day by day. The village people often have rice, so they will go and fish to complete their meal. Everytime we eat a good meal, we should be thankful for what the Lord has provided.

I could not go to Bolivia without passing by the camp. I was so pleased with the advancement of the facilities. The brothers had constructed one side of the diningroom and added a volleyball court for the young people and children. They also completed the construction of the kitchen. We praise God for using others for this purpose.
Now, we need to complete the other half of the diningroom, the washrooms, beds, and tables.

I went to visit Cynthia and Edilson....the ones in charge of the Fourth of February project. They are doing fine. They had a baptism service and an anniversary service. They are doing a great job.

Thank you for your lovely gift of money that was used for medication, food, and the camp. We appreciate your prayers on our behalf. We are very grateful for your interest in missions.

The BLOOD of Jesus

A number of years ago while in Guatemala my wife was asked to donate some blood because she has the rare "universal" blood type. I could not help but think of that experience when I read the following article...

I once heard a story about a Nazi pilot who was shot down during World War II. The pilot was taken captive and brought to the hospital where a British doctor began dressing his wounds. As the doctor worked, he realized a blood transfusion was necessary due to the loss of blood.
When finished, and making use of his British humor, the doctor remarked to the Nazi, “This ought to go far in making a gentleman out of you. I have just put into your system two pints of Jewish blood.” The patient was horrified!
However, no scientific experiment can determine nationality by blood, for we read in God’s Word, that the Lord “hath made of one blood all nations.” (Acts 17:26).
Although there is nothing in the blood to distinguish the nationality, there is a blood classification determined by the presence or absence of certain substances. Before a blood transfusion can be made, the donor’s blood must be tested to be sure the substances are the same as the patient’s. If different bloods are mixed, clotting could begin and this could result in sever illness or even death.
The various blood groups are type A, B, AB or O. Type O is sometimes referred to as “universal” because it does not clump with other plasmas.
Reading about these different blood groups caused me to think of Someone who gave His blood for all – a “universal donor”. The effectiveness of His blood is available to anyone. Like the marvel of the filtering system of the blood, His precious blood has a cleansing effect. “the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin” (1 John 1:7). It would be impossible for us to live without blood in our bodies. The Bible says, “The life…is in the blood” (Lev 17:11), and Christ’s blood is the source of everlasting life. Do you have it?

Poisonwood

On a recent mission to Belize we came across the Poisonwood tree on a hike in the jungle. From its name you will understand why it is a tree not to be messed with. The sap of the poisonwood is extremely toxic and causes blisters and rashes on the skin. The sap can be seen oozing out of any wounds on the bark of the tree. The leaves of the tree are also toxic topically, and some who are extremely allergic to the tree can break out by standing too close to it.

Fortunately, it is often found growing near its natural antidote. Our guide told us that invariably almost always growing near the poisonwood tree is the Gum Elemi tree and the crushed leaves of the Gum Elemi will ease the itch and burn.

So in the gospel. You and I have been affected by the poison of sin. But thank God the antidote to sin is not far from any one of us. That is what we find in the book of Romans: "But what does it say? "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart" (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." (Romans 10:8,9). So the Word is near us not distant, mysterious or inaccessible, but readily available and accessible to all. Have you availed yourself of the antidote to sin in the blood of Jesus?

Maria & Hudson Taylor (1865)

When Hudson Taylor was director of the China Inland Mission, he often interviewed candidates for the mission field. On one occasion, he met with a group of applicants to determine their motivations for service. "And why do you wish to go as a foreign missionary"? he asked one. "I want to go because Christ has commanded us to go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature,? was the reply. Another said, "I want to go because millions are perishing without Christ.? Others gave different answers. Then Hudson Taylor said, "All of these motives, however good, will fail you in times of testings, trials, tribulations, and possible death. There is but one motive that will sustain you in trial and testing; namely, the love of Christ?.

A missionary in Africa was once asked if he really liked what he was doing. His response was shocking. 'do I like this work"? he said. "No. My wife and I do not like dirt. We have reasonable refined sensibilities. We do not like crawling into vile huts through goat refuse...But is a man to do nothing for Christ he does not like? God pity him, if not. I just had to publish a couple of video logs my twin took during our cave tubing outing. Derry organized a trip to the Cave Ranch River where the team floated on tubes in and out of caves. Corozal Town Mission House

I've just now been getting around to processing all the photos and videos of the short-term mission to Belize in March. I wanted to post this one to give a good look at the project completed with a view of the property as well. It will be exciting to see what God will do in this new location. We got to know some of the locals who are very friendly and eager so see something done in the area. Pray for the believers as they reach out and for future teams as they come alongside to help.

Two years ago I lead a small team to Bolivia to help missionaries Enoel and Leisa Suarez in the work there. They are on furlough in Canada right now but are receiving calls for help from his people in Bolivia because of serious flooding that has affected vast regions of the country. He sent me an update today which I want to share with you for prayer and consideration. He writes...

"Please read...Some time ago, I read about the flood that had affected Bolivia……especially Trinidad and the surrounding area. I thought…surely I can help them, so I began to pray for them. However, the news kept coming, and friends described the situation.
After I arrived from my trip to New Jersey, Leisa told me that Dr. Placido Mercado had called and would call again. I talked to him last Saturday, and he informed me of the need.
Doctor Placido Mercado and Brother Julio Acosta have suggested taking items needed. The people are suffering with fungus, diarrhea, dengue fever, breathing problems, and they need to hear the gospel in this difficult situation. We need some antibiotic creams, pills to purify the water, etc.

I mentioned that we had other videos of our short-term mission. Erin sent us a dvd with all the pics and vids, so we are trying to get some uploaded. Here is a shot from way up on top of an ancient Mayan ruin. We can see Guatemala from our vantage point. It is truly amazing to think of the work and expertise that went into the construction of these temples. What happened to the people? What happened to thier civilization?

Flooding in Bolivia

I just got a call from my good friend and missionary Enoel Suarez. A couple of years ago I went to assist him in the work in Bolivia. He has been in Canada on furlough with his family for almost a year now. He just called me bacause of the desperate situation in his country. They have had terrible flooding since January (see exerpt from website below). Doctor friends of his have called asking for his help; they need antibiotics, children's vitamins and parasite medicine and people to help. Just returning from Belize it would be hard for me to go, but I'm willing and praying.

Bolivia Floods Update: shelter for the homeless

The devastating floods continue to cause devastation and mayhem in much of Bolivia, with almost 70,000 families falling victim to the effects of "El Niño". The climate phenomenon of heavy rainfalls and floods has meant thousands of children and their families have had to flee their homes and are at severe risk of disease.

Months of heavy rain have affected the whole of the Latin American country, although the rural districts of Santa Cruz and Beni have been most severely hit, with 17,000 families and almost 13,000 children affected.

Mission House Completed

Immigration, customs, flight delays, time changes, sleep deprivation...these are just a few of the challenges we met as we made our way home. But, praise God, all are home safe and sound and glad for it! In due time we will have more pics and vids to post, but in the meantime I wanted to publish a couple of photos of the building completed...at least at the stage that we came to complete. It sits on a lovely piece of property in a growing neighborhood. At 20 ft x 24 ft it is quite compact but will serve as a mission house and Bible study hall, and later will be a nice little residence for a worker.

We have a bunch of video clips from Cave Branch river, Xunantunich and Sunday services to share but not much time. Here is a clip I managed to get while the trusses of the building were being installed.

Today we were with the saints at Grace Chapel and Berea in Belize City. This afternoon we will be joining them again at 8 Miles for a special meeting in about an hour. This evening we will all go to Bethany Chapel in Burrel Boom again.

Today's verse is Psalm 23:1 "The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want."

Team Canada visits Shark-Ray Ally

Tonight we wanted to give you a view of last Saturday's excursion to Caye Cualker. Erin (Auburn Bible Chapel) produced this video clip for us.

Tomorrow we hope to finish putting the roof on the mission house under construction. Today the trusses were placed and braced. The Lord has blessed us with beautiful weather, health and strength and unity. Janie who was injured in a shower continues to improve - thanks for praying.

The latest footage of progress of Team Canada's mission project in Corozal Town. Today I'm handing Erin's laptop (a Mac!!!) to Mark (from Bancroft Bible Chapel) who will give us a few words for today's post...

alrihgt .. well the project has so far gone very smoothly considering the tools we have to work with. the team is getting along very well together and it is visible to see God working here. the last of the blocks were laid today and we will begin to assemble the roof tommorow. it will only be a few more days before our part is complete. It will be a blessing to see the building complete, however, it will be upsetting to leave so soon. we are looking forward to the next few days and we keep you informed with what is happening here. God bless.

Team Canada at Cay Caulker etc....

e-greetings to our praying friends in bloggerland! Here are a few shots of our mission as we continue to enjoy Belize. Most of the team is here at the Leslies resting after a day at Cay Caulker, a tiny island off the coast. We are having so much fun working, fellowshipping and enjoying the sights. There have been setbacks. Bob Hoover from Bancroft was bitten by a scorpion the other day - it was hiding in his workboot! He is fine; he actually insisted on going to work after we got him some medicine. Also, Janie slipped in the shower at the Dr's house. Please pray for her as she is in a lot of pain.
Other than that the project is pregressing very well. The pictures show Jeremy trying his hand at laying a few block with his uncle Derry. Mark is seen at the top of the wall as they place the last row of blocks on the wall. Next week we hope to finish the cement work and put the roof on. One of the shots pictures the team enjoying a hard earned meal on the island of Cay Caulker.
Tomorrow we will be at several assemblies with some of the team members speaking and shareing testimony. In the afternoon we will visit 8 Miles where the previous team helped renovate the building into a little chapel. All of us will be joining the saints at Bethany Gospel Chapel in Burrel Boom for a gospel meeting. Let us keep this wonderful news of God's love for us in Christ ever at the centre of our hearts and lives.

Team Canada arrives in Corozal

Hey! We made it! After a long day traveling we finally made it through costoms and were met at the airport by our Belizean friends, including Shannon. He helped us transport all our gear to Corozal Town about 2 hours north of Belize City.

The ladies made a trip to a local supermarket to buy some supplies.

Today we were able to begin laying the block (208)! The foundation was finished before we arrived so we could begin the structure. It's not too hot and the food has been great. The internet is slow though and people are waiting, so I will sign off now. Hopefully we can post further updates soon and possibly a video or two.

The team sends warm Belize greetings to all. Thank you for praying!

Greetings from Fonthill!

We are at Eric's house. The team is scattered between here and Buffalo. Jeremy, Erinn and I were at Ridgeville Bible Chapel this evening. We looked at the Potter and the Clay from Jeremiah 18.

1. God is the Potter
2. We are the clay
3. Life is the Wheel
4. Marring is Disobedience
5. Trials are the Furnace

As the Potter, God has power over the clay and if we yield to Him he can mold and make us into a vessel of honor, useful for service.

In a few hours Eric and his dad will transport 7 of us to the airport, with a pitstop at Tim Horton's of course. Hopefully we can bring you up to date soon after our arrival in Belize. Please pray for the team as we travel.

But we have the treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God and not of us. (2 Corinthians 5:17)

Oma feeds the chickens

I was pretty exasperated by the time I finally figured out how to imbed a video on the blog. However, it is only fitting that my mom should be the first to be featured - Praiseing the Lord while she feeds her precious chickens. My twin recorded this a year or so ago. He is here now and we are just about to jump into our Honda and head for Buffalo where he will board a plane for Belize. He will precede the team to get materials together and begin site preparations. So, hopefully we will be able to post a video or two during our mission.

Countdown to Corozal

Hi,

Isn't it beautiful?! That is the northern coastal town of Corozal (See below for details). Only three weeks remain before our short-term team leaves for Belize. Fifteen of us will be working with assemblies of Belize to build a new building and open up a new area in the north of the country. The location is called Corozal Town. I have been there on two previous occasions and look forward to taking this team to work in the area.

When you look at this picture how do you feel? Do you feel sorry? Confused? Angry? Excited? When I saw this picture I was shocked and then Mark 5 immediately came to mind. Also this verse:

And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.(1 Kings 18:28)

There is a lot to think about here, especially from our western culture and our 21st Century. Whatever we think or feel, we should take the time to find out what Christ said and did. Read carefully the following:

They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes. And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit. He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him. Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and bruising himself with stones. Your Passport

As far as travelling in our world today, a passport is a must. Our son Jeremy is planning to accompany me on our next mission to Belize, so it was time to get him his very own passport. Because of new laws in the US requiring Canadians to have a passport to enter by air, there is a mad rush and long lineups. Today we went to an office in Brampton and were in and out in 45 minutes!

By the way, have you got your passport to heaven? How can you get a passport to heaven? Just read this...

Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
(John 14:6)That's right; the passport to heaven is Christ. Recieve Him today! And, oh, did you notice? There are no lineups or waiting!

CE = Christianity Explored

On Sunday Eric Kalmback and his wife shared their experienc of running the CE course at Markham Bible Chapel. Two other ladies, one of which was saved through the studies, also were with us at Northside. According to the CE website "Christianity Explored is an informal course for people who'd like to investigate Christianity, or just brush up on the basics. It explores who Jesus was, what his aims were, and what it means to follow him."
Northside is planning on running this course here in Barrie in the Fall. We will try and keep you posted right here on our blog. Please pray!

CONFLICT!!!

Conflict...we see it everyday, we have it all the time; how do we deal with it?
Last Saturday George Butcher from Orillia shared a session on conflict resolution with the Joint Elder's meeting held at Northside Bible Chapel. George explained that we have many ways of dealing with conflict, many of which do not really help. Some of the bad strategies we use: withdraw, win, yield, and comprimise. The goal in conflict is RESOLVE, working together with respect and responsibility to find a solution. Read Romans 12:9-12
